Cosmetic dentistry guided by clinical planning
Smile design in Colombia: care for your oral health and your smile
Smile design includes different ways to improve tooth shape, color, and harmony. It may be a small repair to an incisal edge or a plan combining treatments. Dr. Johanna Calderón and a team of specialists assess your teeth, gums, and bite before recommending an option.
What would you like to improve?
We assess changes in color, chipped or worn edges, differences in tooth size or shape, spaces between teeth, and the balance between teeth and gums. Not every smile needs veneers. If we find decay, gum disease, or bite concerns, we consider how to treat them before cosmetic work.
Smile design options
Your plan may include one or more options. An assessment determines what is suitable for you.
Incisal edges and composite touch-ups
For localized changes in length or shape. We assess wear, bite, and the scope of the change before restoring.
Direct composite veneers
The clinician shapes composite on the tooth. In selected cases this may be done in one visit; follow-up, polishing, or repair may be needed.
Indirect composite veneers
Designed from digital records and made in a laboratory, then tried in and placed according to your individual plan.
Ceramic or lithium disilicate veneers
Laboratory-made restorations. Suitability and any tooth preparation depend on enamel, bite, and clinical goals.
Teeth whitening
Changes the color of natural teeth. Crowns, veneers, and existing restorations do not whiten like natural enamel.
Gum contouring
A periodontist assesses whether gum contouring is appropriate and whether bone treatment is also needed.
Orthodontics and rehabilitation
When teeth are misaligned or the bite needs correction, improving position and function first may be advisable.
Comprehensive smile design
A staged plan may combine treatments. The plan follows an assessment; there is no identical package for everyone.
How to choose between composite and ceramic?
The material depends on your enamel, bite, goals, budget and willingness to maintain the restorations. A clinician must examine your case before recommending veneers.
Composite
Direct composite is shaped on the tooth and can sometimes be completed in one visit. Local repairs and polishing are possible, but staining and wear may mean more frequent maintenance. Indirect composite is made in a laboratory and needs additional visits.
Ceramic
Lithium disilicate veneers are made in a laboratory. They generally resist surface staining better and cost more. If damaged, repair may be more complex. Preparation and suitability depend on tooth position, enamel and bite.
If teeth are crowded or the bite needs correction, orthodontics may help us preserve more tooth structure before restorative treatment. Whitening or small composite additions can be enough for some patients. We explain alternatives, expected care and limitations during the assessment.
Preserve your teeth and assess your bite first
We aim to avoid unnecessary or excessive removal of tooth structure. When teeth are misaligned, we first assess whether orthodontics can improve their position and function before recommending veneers. Covering misaligned teeth does not itself correct the bite and, in some cases, may require more enamel preparation.
Removing enamel is irreversible. Conservative planning also considers gum health, teeth grinding, and the forces on teeth and restorations. We explain the benefits, limitations, and alternatives before you decide. Your oral health matters alongside the cosmetic result.
How we plan treatment
- We listen to your goals and assess your teeth, gums, and bite.
- We take standardized photographs and, where appropriate, intraoral scans.
- We may use digital design, a wax-up, or a mock-up to study and explain the proposed outcome.
- We review materials, timing, fees, and care with you before starting.
- We carry out the agreed treatment and schedule the follow-up visits included in your plan.
This planning process is available at our locations. Veneers are placed by oral rehabilitation specialists and Dr. Johanna Calderón; gum procedures are performed by periodontists.

Timing and patients traveling from abroad
Direct composite veneers may be completed in one visit when clinically appropriate. Indirect composite or ceramic veneers usually require about five days for the full process and laboratory work. Orthodontic, periodontal, or other preparatory treatment takes longer.
We can guide you before you travel and offer information to help you arrange accommodation, transport, or tourism activities if requested. These travel costs are not included in treatment. Some plans can be completed in one trip; we will confirm feasibility and follow-up needs before you book travel.
Financing through a financial institution is available for Colombian and international patients. Approval and terms depend on that institution’s assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Do veneers require drilling?
It depends on tooth position, enamel, bite, material, and your goals. Some cases allow minimal preparation; others require enamel removal, which cannot be reversed. We discuss the plan before treatment.
Should I have orthodontics before veneers?
If teeth are misaligned or the bite needs correction, orthodontics may be the first step. It can allow a more conservative restorative plan, but the decision requires an individual assessment.
Are the prices for a full smile?
Veneer and incisal-edge prices are per tooth. Gum contouring is priced per sextant (six teeth). The number of teeth and any additional treatments are determined during your assessment.
Can I complete treatment on one trip to Colombia?
Some plans may fit in one trip. We first review your case and discuss the visits and follow-up required; orthodontic or periodontal care may extend the timeline.
